St. Bernards are large working dogs
originally bred by monks to guard
the grounds of their hospice at
Switzerland’s Great St. Bernard Pass.
St. Bernards have been credited with
rescuing more than 2,000 injured or
stranded travelers during three centuries
of recorded hospice records.
In the early 1800s, one St. Bernard,
named Barry, saved over forty lives.
They’re nicknamed “Barry dogs.”
