Dandie Dinmont Terriers are little,
unique dogs named after a fictional
character. They gained notoriety and
a name in Sir Walter Scott’s book
Guy Mannering, published in 1815.
In the book, a farmer has six small,
long terriers. The farmer’s name is
Dandie Dinmont and the little dogs
came to be known as Dandie Dinmont’s
Terriers, with the apostrophe and s
eventually being dropped.
The fictional farmer had two
names for his little Dandies:
Pepper and Mustard.
He differentiated them as -
Auld Pepper, Auld Mustard,
Young Pepper, Young Mustard,
Little Pepper and Little Mustard.
Today the two colors of the breed
are still known as Pepper (bluish black)
and Mustard (shades of golden brown).
Dandies are rare, short-legged,
long-bodied dogs with a distinct
poof of hair on their big dome heads.

Large chests and curved backs.
Hind legs slightly longer than
front legs, and not as heavy.
